Luxco plans $27m distillery in Kentucky
Rebel Yell Bourbon owner Luxco may spend more than US$27 million on building its first wholly-owned distillery in Kentucky after tax incentives for the project received preliminary approval.

As reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority (KEDFA) has granted family-owned Missouri-based group US$1.3m in tax incentives for the project.
The KEDFA claims that Luxco is seeking “scenic setting” for the distillery, which it hopes will become part of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. The group is planning to spend US$2.2m on the area of land, US$20m on buildings and US$5.1 on equipment.
The distillery would employ an estimates 34 people with an average hourly wage of US$25 plus benefits. It would also feature a visitors’ centre.
Historically, Luxco has sourced its liquid from third party producers. As such, if plans go ahead, this site would be Luxco’s first standalone site and may include the production of new brands.
Luxco purchased a number of brands from Beam Global in 2013 for US$65m, including Rebel Yell Bourbon, Calvert Canadian whiskey and Dark Eyes Vodka.
In the same report by the KEDFA, it was revealed that Jim Beam is considering further expansion, with tax incentives approved for six new barrel warehouses.
Meanwhile, the Bardstown Bourbon Company also received US$56m in bonds. The company is currently building a US$25m distillery in Nelson County, Kentucky, which is set to open in 2016.
