New York Distilling Co. expands rye range
By Amy HopkinsThe New York Distilling Company has launched the second bottling in its series of American rye whiskeys, called Ragtime Rye.
Ragtime Rye is made using corn and rye grown in New York StateProduced at the Brooklyn-based distillery, Ragtime Rye follows the launch of Mister Katz’s Rock & Rye – a blend of the distillery’s young rye whiskey with rock candy sugar, sour cherries, cinnamon and citrus.
Aged in full-size American oak barrels for a minimum of three years, Ragtime is described as a “bold” straight American rye whiskey.
“At New York Distilling Company we make gins and rye whiskey’s because collectively they form the backbone of traditional cocktails in America,” said Allen Katz, co-founder of the New York Distillery Company.
“In both frameworks there is great opportunity for originality and purposeful difference in the style of spirits we want to produce and offer to the public.”
Ragtime Rye has a mash bill of 72% rye, 16% corn and 12% malted barley, with the rye and corn grains sourced from New York State. The rye is specifically grown for New York Distilling Company by Pedersen Family Farms in the Central Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.
“With the addition of Ragtime Rye we have been able to increase our commitment to rye grown in New York State and thus our overall production of rye whiskey 10 fold,” added Katz.
Bottled at 90.4% proof (45.2% abv), Ragtime Rye is said to have a flavour of caramel, tobacco, clove, white pepper and fruit. Its producer recommends the rye is consumed neat, or as part of a cocktail.
The rye first launched in the US on 1 September 2015 at an RRP of US$44.
