ELLC launches age-your-own-whisky initiative
By Annie HayesEast London Liquor Company has launched Creator’s Cask 2015, giving fans the chance to own one of the first whisky casks to be produced in London for more than 100 years.
The Creator’s Cask initiative enables barrel owners to create their own bespoke liquid
The Creator’s Cask collection encompasses 25 casks in a range of sizes – from 30L to 200L – and styles, including new oak, ex-red wine and ex-Bourbon.
After choosing the barrel size and type, owners will be able to fill their selected cask with the signature London Rye whisky produced on-site, and visit throughout the year to check on the maturation process.
With the help of the distillery team, barrel owners will create their own bespoke liquid in one of the first casks of whisky to be aged in London since the Lea Valley Distillery closed over 100 years ago.
“As with everything we do here at East London Liquor Company, we want to make beautiful handmade spirits accessible for everyone. We want to give people who are as passionate about whisky as we are the opportunity to be part of the process with us, at our home here in East London. And it sure beats receiving a pair of socks on Christmas Day morning!” says Alex Wolpert, founder of East London Liquor Company.
The heavily charred new oak casks are said to impart a “mellow vanilla-like quality”on the whisky, while reconditioned Bourbon or red wine barrels will offer flavours such as”toasted almonds” and “rich dried fruits”.
Prices start from £4,100 for a 30L new oak cask that will produce approximately 40 bottles at cask strength, and stretch to £21,200 for a 200L ex-Bourbon cask that will produce approximately 269 bottles.
