‘Game-changing’ whisky glass seeks funding

A new “game-changing” whisky glass that combines the designs of nosing vessels and classic tumblers has launched a crowd-funding campaign.

The Norlan is described as a “hybrid” whisky glass, combining the designs of nosing glasses and classic tumblers

Launched by US-based global brand design agency Norlan, the namesake Norlan glass will be the first flagship release in a range of products designed to “modernise“ the whisky drinking experience.

The glass was created by Icelandic designer Sruli Recht with input from master distillers in Scotland.

It is described as a “hybrid” of the traditional nosing and tumbler glass designs, which Norlan claims leave “key deficiencies” for whisky drinkers.

According to the group, nosing glasses can “obscure” subtle flavours and “anti-social” since drinkers are required to tip their heads back. Meanwhile, traditional tumblers have a “broad aesthetic appeal” and are more sociable, but their wide brims can “diffuse” aroma.

The Norlan whisky glass has been created using “digital technologies” and a “double-walled” glassblowing technique to “bring together” the positive qualities of both glass types, but “improving” on scent delivery.

Norlan has developed a patent pending feature that “dramatically increases” the rate of oxidization within the glass, releasing ethanol vapours more quickly.

The Norlan glass will be priced at US$48 for a set of two, and will be available at retail in spring of 2016.

It will now be featured on the Kickstarter crowd-funding website for 45 days.
