Isle of Arran Distillery unveils Smugglers’ Series
By Melita KielyIsle of Arran Distillery is celebrating its 21st anniversary with the first launch in its Smugglers’ Series – a nod to the illicit whisky trade that operated from Arran to Glasgow.
Arran Distillery has released the first whisky in its Smugglers’ Series
The Smugglers’ Series takes inspiration from the brand’s history and pays homage to a time when whisky was illegally transported from Arran, up the Clyde to Glasgow.
Each expression in the range will be packaged in a way that is indicative of the hiding places used in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Smugglers’ Series Vol. 1 The Illicit Stills features hidden packaging that takes shape in the form of a hardbound book complete with a cut-out compartment that hides the bottle.
The whisky boasts a “robust body” and heavy peat flavours, balanced with sweetness from older Bourbon barrels and fruity notes of Port Pipes.
“We’re justifiably proud of the whiskey making heritage of the island,” said Euan Mitchell, managing director of Isle of Arran Distillery. “Visitors have long been fascinated in the illicit industry that ran between Arran and Glasgow in centuries past.
“With the distillery turning 21, it felt like the perfect time to commemorate that exciting time in Scotch whisky’s heritage with a series that pays homage to its ancestors whilst looking forward to the distillery’s future.”
Non-chill-filtered, The Illicit Stills is a limited edition with just 8,700 bottles released globally.
Bottled at 56.4% abv, the expression has an RRP of £84.99.
