Swizzle Masters Spicy Tequila winner revealed

With hot weather and long evenings ahead, we challenged bartenders to create a sizzling Spicy Tequila cocktail, and Trinh Quan Huy-Philip did exactly that with his creation Cinco De Mayo.

Vinexpo Bordeaux was the venue of choice for our Spicy Tequila judging heat

This month’s heat required classic Tequila cocktails with a spicy kick using Jose Cuervo Silver and at least a dash of Wenneker Liqueurs, and our judges were not left disappointed.

This month was an exciting anomaly in the Swizzle Masters calendar, as we headed south across the English Channel for world class wine and spirits trade show, Vinexpo Bordeaux, the venue of choice for our Spicy Tequila judging heat and the home of our Spiritual bar.

This year, Spiritual partnered with members of the United States Bartenders’ Guild (USBG) and the Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus), a select few of which formed our elite judging panel, while Wenneker Distilleries brand ambassador, Ron de Preter, skillfully tended bar.

Accomplished industry figures Daan van der Tuijn and Eddy van der Tuijn, MD and commercial director, and purchasing director of Wenneker Distilleries respectively; Rhonda Follrath of Discus; Daniel Crebesse, former president of the UKBG; and Daisy Jones, associate publisher and events director at The Spirits Business, offered their expert tastebuds to assess the entries carefully created by each mixologist in their respective bars.

Of the round, Jones said: “This was one of the best rounds of the year, with an incredibly high quality of entry level.”

Second place was awarded to Cocktus by Kriss Kovy, while third place was given to Yes Way, Jose by Elliot Ball.

Trinh Quan Huy-Philip’s recipe will now go through to the semi-final in October, when the winning drinks from throughout the year will be recreated once more and judged against each other.

Five drinks will then be chosen to go through to the grand final in November, and the bartender behind the winning recipe will be crowned Swizzle Master 2015 and win £1,000.

The next Wenneker Swizzle Masters round is Irish Whiskey Punch. Judges are looking for a refreshing long drink which features Tullamore Dew 12 Year Old Irish Whiskey as the base spirit and includes at least a dash of Wenneker Liqueurs.
