Berry Bros. launches fourth batch of Penny Blue

Fine wine and spirits merchant Berry Bros. & Rudd and the Indian Ocean Company have launched the fourth batch of the Penny Blue XO Rum series.

Just 10,000 bottles of Penny Blue XO Rum Batch Four have been launched globally, excluding the US

Penny Blue is named after the world’s rarest stamp and distilled in Medine – the oldest operational distillery in Mauritius dating back to 1926.

As chosen by Doug McIvor, spirits manager for Berry Bros. & Rudd, and Jean Francois Koenig, master distiller at Medine Distillery, the limited edition XO 4 Mauritian rum comprises expressions matured in both Bourbon and whisky casks aged from four to 11 years.

“The key to the success of the Penny Blue series is retaining a level of continuity with each release, yet ensuring each batch is distinct in character,” commented McIvor.

“Batch four is wonderfully rich and opulent with high levels of complexity which have become associated with each of the Penny Blue releases.”

Penny Blue XO Batch Four is bottled at 43.3% abv and is said to offer aromas of tropical fruits, hints of eucalyptus, wood spice, citrus and vanilla while being “nicely textured and succulent” on the palate with some wood spice dryness on the finish.

Unlike Batch Three, which was only available in Mauritius, just 10,000 bottles Batch Four is available now to purchase globally – except for in the US – at an RRP of £41.95 (€52.95) per 700ml bottle.
