‘World’s first’ single malt glass closures created

Online spirits retailer Master of Malt has launched the world’s first single malt whiskies featuring “experimental” glass closures.

Said to “make cork taint in single malt whiskies a thing of the past”, the new closures will feature on two 12-year-old Bruichladdich single malts, one matured in first-fill Sherry casks, another in first-fill Bourbon casks.

The “innovative” closure is thought to eliminate the “undesirable aromas and flavours” resulting from cork, and are more “attractive and functional” than screw tops, which Master of Malt claims are not viewed as aesthetically pleasing.

The UK retailer adds that unlike decanter stoppers, the glass closures are airtight and thin due to a “specially engineered rubberised seal”.

While discussions around cork and screw cap closures have long taken place in the wine world, Master of Malt claims bottle development is a “much smaller consideration” in the spirits industry.

It has not yet been revealed which company manufactured the new glass closures.

In April last year, Master of Malt launched what it claimed was the world’s first collection of educational blended malt Scotch whiskies.
