US distiller to launch Moonshine into space

The Onyx Spirits Company is set to fire a bottle of its signature moonshine 22 miles into space aboard a custom-built balloon.

Independent distiller the Onyx Spirits Company will launch its signature moonshine into space on 2 May

A team of scientists has spent two years building Onyx 1 – a “weather balloon-powered space apparatus” – for Onyx Spirits Company, based in New England, US.

It will carry a 750ml bottle of the brand’s signature Moonshine, which will be mounted on a silver platter with an accompanying rocks glass.

The vessel is fitted with GoPro cameras, GPS, a radar detector, a deployable parachute and protective foam casing to protect the bottle upon landing, and is planned to depart from Connecticut on Saturday 2 May, depending on the weather.

“Onyx Moonshine is all about attempting things that haven’t been done before, which is the true essence of the American spirit,” Adam von Gootkin, co-founder of Onyx Spirits Company, said.

“It’s amazing to think that 150 years ago our ancestors were arrested for illegally selling moonshine and here we are, legally sending a bottle into space.

“This is just one small adventure of many more to come,” he added.

Earlier this month The Savoy hotel’s Beaufort Bar in London became the world’s first bar to send its cocktail menu into space.
