Teen alcohol consumption continues to fall
By Melita KielyAlcohol consumption and binge drinking among young adolescents aged between 12 and 17 is declining in the US, a new report has revealed.
Alcohol consumption and binge drinking among American teenagers is decliningA national survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) showed that the number of 12 to 17-year-olds in the US who admitted drinking in the past month fell from 12.9% in 2012 to 11.6% in 2013.
Levels of binge drinking in the past month were also lower in 2013 at 6.2% compared to 7.2% in 2012.
“This report shows that we have made important progress in some key areas, but that we need to rejuvenate our efforts to promote prevention, treatment, and recovery to reach all aspects of our community,” said Pamela Hyde, SAMHSA administrator.
“The real lives represented by these statistics deserve our protection and help from the ravages of substance use disorders.
“Through a comprehensive, national effort we can help people avoid or recover from substance use problems and lead healthy, productive lives.”
