Dublin to open another Irish whiskey distillery

The Dublin Whiskey Company is to spend €10 million building a new Irish whiskey distillery and visitors’ centre in Ireland’s capital.

The firm will build a new 25,000 square feet distillery with capacity for two million bottles of single malt and pot still Irish whiskey, joining a number of other new distilleries launching to capitalise on the Irish whiskey boom.

Based at a 300-year-old site in Dublin’s Mill Street, the distillery is also attempting to raise funds through the government’s EII Scheme.

The distillery cites figures from the Irish Whiskey Association showing that the Irish whiskey category has grown by almost 200% in the past decade.

Irish whiskey exports are also predicted to double by 2020, with 11 new distilleries commencing production in the next few years.

“Figures from the Irish Whiskey Association show that there is a ‘global renaissance’ in Irish whiskey and now it is the fastest growing spirits category in the world,” said Marie Byrne, managing director of Dublin Whiskey Company.

“Potential investors will be attracted to our business by the knowledge that they are investing in a rapidly growing market set against a backdrop where the international prospects for Irish whiskey are bright.”

The Dublin Whiskey Company, which is expected to start production by the end of 2014, will produce bottles for the domestic and export markets and will also be able to facilitate 75,000 visitors a year at its visitors’ centre.

Over 60 people will be employed during the construction phase beginning in early 2015 with 30 permanent jobs available upon completion at the end of the year.

The development of the whiskey range will be overseen by the company’s master distiller and global whiskey consultant Dr Jim Swan. Meanwhile, Pat Burke, Enterprise Ireland mentor, is also part of the management team in a consultancy capacity.

After being founded by Marie Byrne, Edmond O’Flaherty and Pat O’Brien in 2012, the Dublin Whiskey Company was recently granted planning permission by Dublin City Council.

It joins the new Teeling Whiskey Company (TWC) Distillery in Dublin, which when it opens as scheduled at the end of this year, will be the capital’s first distillery in more than 125 years.
