Alltech plans new Kentucky Bourbon distillery

Animal feed and spirits producer Alltech plans to advance its presence in the Bourbon industry by building a new distillery in eastern Kentucky.

Alltech plans to open a new Bourbon distillery and farm in eastern Kentucky

With US$13.7m support from the Kentucky state to widen roads and build a new bridge, the Pikeville-based complex will also feature aquaculture and poultry farms.

Alltech co-founder Deirdre Lyons told the Lexington Herald-Leader that construction would start on the Dueling Barrels distillery when engineering and demolition work were completed on the site, which is currently owned by Alltech.

Lyons estimates that the Bourbon distillery will cost between US$10m and US$12m to build, but that the number of jobs created would be difficult to estimate.

The project is part of the Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR) initiative, which was launched to boost eastern Kentucky’s economy.

In October 2012, Alltech opened a new distillery in Lexington, Kentucky – the first to be built in the town for 100 years.

The group, which produces a range of spirits and beers in addition to its core animal feed business, opened an Irish whiskey distillery in County Carlow in 2012, but has since revealed plans to move its operation to an abandoned church in Dublin.
