Gin consumption soars in Australia
By Melita KielyThe number of Australian adults who drink gin in any given four-week period has increased by a third, new research has revealed.
Gin consumption grew by a third in Australia from 2009 to 2013In 2009, the number of gin drinkers stood at 636,000 Australian adults, but grew to 947,000 by 2013, according to Roy Morgan Research.
The number of women consuming gin in 2013 was 483,000, marginally higher than the number of men, 464,000. However, its popularity among both genders has grown almost equally, with men accounting for 40% of gin drinkers in both 2009 and 2013.
“In what is sure to be intoxicating news for gin distillers, the last five years have seen an increase in the popularity of the spirit in Australia, particularly among younger drinkers,” said Angela Smith, group account director, consumer products, Roy Morgan Research.
Younger age groups are also discovering a penchant for gin.
In 2009, 91,000 18 to 24-year-olds drank gin in any given four weeks, but by 2013 this figure had soared to 175,000 – an upsurge of 92%.
The number of gin drinkers aged between 25 and 34-year-old also increased from 126,000 to 205,000.
“No doubt contributing to the trend has been the establishment of specialised gin bars over the last few years, such as the Gin Garden in Sydney or the longer-standing Gin Palace in Melbourne, which serve multiple gin brands and gin-based cocktails,” explained Smith.
“What’s more, several boutique gin distilleries have sprung up in Australia in recent years, possibly generating interest in the spirit among our more patriotic imbibers.”
