Bunnahabhain unveils two limited edition malts
By Amy HopkinsScotch whisky brand Bunnahabhain is to release two limited edition single malts at this year’s whisky and music festival in Islay, Feis Ile.
Bunnahabhain Westering Home and Bunnahabhain Dràm an Stiùreadair will be unveiled at this year’s Islay FestivalJust 301 bottles of 17-year-old Bunnahabhain Westering Home, which is named after a traditional Islay folk song recounting the story of a mariner travelling back to the island, are set for release.
Matured in a rich ex-Cognac cask and then finished in a luxurious Sauterne dessert wine cask, Bunnahabhain Westering Home is said to have an the aroma of marmalade, honeycomb and white chocolate.
The edition’s label was designed by Swedish artist Mathilda Holmqvist as part of the brand’s 2013 ‘Tales of the Sea’ design competition.
The second limited edition release is Bunnahabhain Dràm an Stiùreadair, a 10-year-old single malt which was first matured in ex-American Bourbon casks for nine years before being finished for one year in a Marsala cask.
Just 632 bottles of the edition, whose name translates as “The Helmsman’s Dram”, will be available.
Bunnahabhain Dràm an Stiùreadair is said to have smoky and rich oaky and vanilla flavours as a result of the combined cask aging.
Michelle Lansdowne, senior brand manager at Burn Stewart Distillers, parent company of Bunnahabhain, said: “We wanted to create something special for this year’s whisky festival and with such limited availability of these exclusive single malts, they will definitely appeal to anyone attending the festival, as well as international collectors of rare malts.
“The flavours, aromas and finish of both these expressions add a further layer of complexity to the wonderful signature taste profile of Bunnahabhain.”
Bunnahabhain Westering Home, bottled at 53.4% abv, is priced at £250, while Bunnahabhain Dràm an Stiùreadair, bottled at 56.7% abv, is priced at £95.
The 2014 Islay Festival Feis Ile will run from 23rd to 31st of May 2014.
