Ardbeg marks World Cup with limited edition

Islay Scotch whisky brand Ardbeg has unveiled a new limited edition bottling to celebrate the 2014 World Cup.

Ardbeg has revealed its new limited edition Scotch – Auriverdes – named to celebrate the 2014 World Cup

The new release, called Auriverdes, has been matured in American oak casks with differently toasted lids – said to produce both “coffee mocha” and “creamy vanilla” flavours.

To mark the 2014 World Cup in Brazil this summer, Auriverdes adopts the nickname of the country’s national football team. Its release also celebrates Ardbeg’s Peat Football tournament, inspired by the World Cup.

The title of the whisky is also said to derive from the colour of the golden whisky (auri) in Ardbeg’s iconic green bottle (verde).

Auriverdes follows the 2012 launch of limited edition Galileo, a 12-year-old single malt created to mark the distillery’s experiement to mature whisky in space.

“When creating Auriverdes I had a distinct flavour profile in mind that I wanted to achieve, so I specifically created the heart of the recipe to bring that to life,” said Dr Bill Lumsden, director of distillation and whisky creation at brand-owner The Glenmorangie Company, part of French group LVMH.

“It is an expression of Ardbeg which has exceeded all my expectations – it has the trademark Ardbeg undertones with a distinct new taste experience.

Auriverdes, bottled at 49.9% abv, will be released on Ardbeg Day – a “celebration of all things Ardbeg” – on 31 May and will carry an RRP of £79.99.
