Walker was chosen as one of the three “most promising” bartenders in the UK following a competition held in London last year, along with Nelson Bernardes of Good Godfrey’s at The Waldorf Hilton in London, who has since moved to the Long Bar at the Waldorf Astoria at the Bund in Shanghai, and Sam Kershaw of Callooh Callay in London.
The three spent the last 12 months promoting their cocktails through events, guest bartending and gaining listings in bars around the world.
Following a grand final held in London this week, Walker and his cocktail Maid in Cuba were named the overall winners, and will go through to represent the UK in the global final in Moscow in April 2014.
“The Maid in Cuba pays homage to the classic drinks of the past, such as the Mojito and the Daiquiri, as well as the contemporary classic, the Old Cuban,” Walker explained.
“In the same way that Harry Craddock took an American invention and made something applicable to the British public, so too was the aim of this cocktail. “The Maid in Cuba stands as a point that there are still another 150 years of history to make and celebrate, both with Bacardi and with bartending as a profession.”
