Belarus police seek fake alcohol tip-offs by post

Police in Belarus are asking people to help them tackle the country’s bootlegging problem by sending anonymous tip-offs in the post.

Police in Belarus have asked members of the public to send them anonymous tip-offs for bootleg alcohol in the post

According to the BBC, Belarus citizens have been asked by police to send anonymous letters stating the location of where they believe illegal alcohol is being made.

Belposhta, the state-run postal service, has agreed to deliver the mail for free.

Police added that if citizens believe that illegal alcohol is being made in a remote wooded area, then they should provide directions to “the locaton of the apparatus used to produce illegal alcohol in a forest”.

Bootlegging is a prevalent problem in Eastern European countries, with governments seeking more creative ways to crack down on illegal production.

In 2013, the Belarus government said that a drone aircraft would scour the country in search of illicit distilleries.

Numerous deaths have been reported in Eastern Europe over recent years as a result of the rise of the black market for spirits.

An emergency alcohol prohibition measure was implemented in the Czech Republic in 2012 after over 20 died as a result of consuming poison counterfeit spirit.
