Luxardo Master of Maraschino 2013 named

Damiano Madeddu from The Rivoli Bar at The Ritz in London has been named the winner of the 2013 Luxardo Masters of Maraschino competition.

Damiano Madeddu was crowned the winner of the 2013 Masters of Maraschino

With the final this year held at the Boutique Bar Show in Holborn, London, Madeddu battled for the title alongside 11 other elite bartenders from across the UK who were tasked with creating a unique cocktail featuring Luxardo Maraschino.

His signature cocktail, the Luxardo Punch – which features Zacapa 23-year-old rum, Luxardo Sangue Morlacco, passion fruit juice, pineapple juice and Champagne – nabbed Madeddu the grand prize of a trip to the Luxardo distillery near Venice in Italy, as well as a rare bottle of 1960s Luxardo Maraschino.

Matteo Luxardo, export manager of Luxardo and judge, said: “The Luxardo Masters of Maraschino competition is one of our most exciting international highlights. The bartender finalists are extremely talented and showed their experience in having mastered the classics, combined with a quest for adventurous new flavours. Some of these new drinks may become as well as known the Aviation and Martinez, whilst others will long be remembered for their daring innovation, and pushing the boundaries of using Luxardo Maraschino.”

The competition, which was also judged by Mike Sweetman, London chairman of the UKBG and Tim Robinson of Twist London, saw bartenders turn to base spirits such as grappa and Tequila to pair with the Maraschino.

In second place was Benji Purslow of Archer Street in Soho, while Nicholas Quattroville of the Blind Pig in Soho came in third.
