Glenfiddich Cask Collection “most innovative” this year

Glenfiddich has launched The Cask Collection, its first no-age-statement range of single malts, into global travel retail this month; a range the company is calling its “most innovative launch of the year”.

The Glenfiddich Cask Collection is heralded as the company’s most innovative release of the year

Created using Glenfiddich’s solera vat technique pioneered for its 15-year-old whisky, the Cask Collection consists of three expressions: Select Cask, Reserve Cask and Vintage Cask, all of which are bottled at 40% abv.

Fifteen years on from the creation of its first solera vat in 1998, Glenfiddich has built three additional oak vats especially for the Cask Collection, each of which is never less than half full and is regularly replenished with matured whisky for marrying for several weeks.

Each of the permanent additions to Glenfiddich’s travel retail offering has a unique flavour and style, designed to “appeal to the varied preferences of single malt drinkers around the world”.

The Select Cask, which carries an RRP of £39 for one litre, is created from whisky aged in Bourbon, European oak and Californian red wine casks to accentuate the fruity distillery character, and as such has notes of ripe fruit, juicy raisins and a hint of spice.

The Reserve Cask carries an RRP of £49 for one litre, and is aged in Sherry casks for an oakier, drier yet rich, sweet and spicy flavour.

The Vintage Cask meanwhile is inspired by the style of spirit made at Glenfiddich in 1887, made using a proportion of peated barley, which imparts a subtle yet noticeable smoky flavour, with the liquid aged in European oak and Bourbon casks. As Glenfiddich produces only a limited quantity of peated whisky, the Vintage Cask carries an RRP of £79 for a 700ml bottle.

The Select and Reserve Casks have been exclusively launched into global travel retail through Heinemann in Germany and DFS in Singapore, with the latter steadily rolling the two out across Hong Kong, Abu Dhabi, New York and Australian airports over the next six months.

The Vintage Cask meanwhile will join the Cask Collection in April 2014 when the range becomes more widely available in additional duty free retailers.

“We believe the global travel retail channel offers a real opportunity to showcase our new Cask Collection in an environment where we can display the range for consumers and connoisseurs who are looking for education, information and to enjoy a new taste sensation,” said Rita Greenwood, director for GTR at William Grant.

Brian Kinsman, malt master at Glenfiddich, said: “Glenfiddich has a long and illustrious history of innovation within the single malt category and these latest additions to our no-age range allow us to offer single malt aficionados the best of both worlds – whiskies crafted for their flavour, alongside whiskies bottled by their age.”

Glenfidiich is thought to continue adding more expressions to the Cask Collection over time.
