Bartender kicks “thirsty” bear out of bar
“A bear walks into a bar,” sounds like the opening of a tedious joke, but for one Alaskan bartender it was a startling reality.
Black bears are common in Alaska, but rarely enter bars
Ariel Svetlik-McCarthy was working at the Alaskan Hotel in downtown Juneau on Monday night (23 September) when a black bear walked into the bar.
Most average people when faced with such a situation may balk at the entrance of a bear into their bar, and Svetlik-McCarthy was apparently no different.
According to local newservice KTOO, she screamed: “No bear! Get out! No! You can’t be in here!” Surprisingly the bear complied and left quickly.
C. Scott Fry, hotel and bar manager of The Alaskan Hotel, said: “As soon as he got to the bar door, it made a left and walked in like he wanted to have a beer.”
Luckily the bar was quiet and no patrons were hurt.
Ryan Scott, area management biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, told the local newspaper that bears rarely enter buildings in the area, although Alaskan wildlife officials have put down two nuisance bears in Janneau this summer.
