Whyte & Mackay launches new version of Mackinlay’s malt

Whyte & Mackay has launched a new blended Scotch – a new version of Mackinlay’s malt whisky.

Mackinlay’s The Journey whisky

The whisky was originally created for explorer Ernest Shackleton’s epic Antarctic adventure of 1907.

The new spirit, called Mackinlay’s The Journey, is a replica of the whisky, which was found under Shackleton’s hut in the Antarctic.

The Antarctic Heritage Trust (AHT) requested that the company recreate the whisky to help raise funds for expedition bases on the Antarctic.

A first run of the Mackinley’s whisky raised close to £250,000 for the AHT and it is hoped this second batch will raise around £500,000.

The Trust’s executive director Nigel Watson said: “I was delighted when I heard the news that Whyte & Mackay would launch a different product called Mackinlay’s The Journey. Not only will it give more people a chance to taste part of history, the donation from future sales will greatly assist our efforts to conserve and maintain Shackleton’s Antarctic legacy for the benefit of current and future generations. The Trust is extremely grateful for their major contribution to the cause.”

Richard Paterson, Whyte & Mackay’s master blender, who was responsible for recreating the Mackinlay whisky, said: “I’m delighted that my experience and skill has paid dividends, and not just for the company, the industry or for those that love whisky or history. It’s also made a tangible difference to the AHT.”

The plan is to produce 100,000 bottles, which will be sold in key markets around the world and in the travel retail sector.
