Meat cocktails on the menu at Shaka Zulu
By Becky PaskinShaka Zulu, the South African bar and restaurant in London’s Camden, will this month open a dedicated Meat Bar, specialising in meat-infused cocktails.
The Meatequita cocktail (tequila reposado infused with chorizo, vegetable juice, balsamic vinegar, smoked sea salt, pepper and port) from The Meat Bar at Shaka ZuluThe brainchild of head barman Tony Safiq, the Meat Bar will infuse meats such as chorizo, bacon and salmon with vodka and tequila to create cocktails such as The Bloody Bacon, Wheeling Salmon and Meatequita. Each one is accompanied by a savoury garnish such as biltong strips and chorizo, a skewer of soft cheese and cherry tomatoes, and smoked salmon stuffed baby red peppers.
Canadian-born Safiq said the range was designed for London’s more ‘experimental’ drinkers.
“It’s not for everyone – it’s not exactly a Cosmopolitan, but London’s one of the leading cities for cocktails and drinkers here are very open minded,” he said. “I think this will catch on.”
To accompany the cocktails, Shaka Zulu’s Meat Bar will have a bar menu featuring platters of cured meats, cheeses and oysters, each designed to complement the drinks.
“I’ve done a lot of research and read about some amazing drinks in the States, but managing to make those flavours actually work in a drink has been really tricky, but I’m pleased with the results,” Safiq added.
