Hungarian crowned Bols Bartending World Champion
Hungarian bartender Gabor Onufer has been named the winner of the 2012 Bols Bartending World Championship at a grand final event held in Amsterdam.
Eleven finalists met at the Escape nightclub in Holland’s capital over a four-day competition comprising of three rounds: the creation of an Amsterdam-inspired cocktail, a food pairing and an interview with a panel of five judges headed by Rob Rademaker, master bartender at the Bols Bartending Academy.
Onufer’s cocktail tribute to Amsterdam, The Merchant – a blend of Bols Genever, Bols Apricot, Pedro Ximenez sherry, sugar syrup, lemon juice and orange bitters – along with a matching cheese platter Pass the Dutchie, impressed judges with their balanced and well-aligned flavours.
“The balance of ingredients and the taste of sweet, sour and bitter were excellent,” said Rademaker. “Gabor has the right level of commercial understanding and his body language, speed and interaction creates the perfect formula to meet the exacting demands required of bartenders today.”
The other 10 finalists competing in the event were shortlisted from a total of 1,500 entrants, representing 56 countries. They were: Andrzej Rachwalski (Poland), Bruno Santos (China), Danil Nevsky (UK), Jason Clark (New Zealand), Kevin Ligot (Belgium), Ryuichiro Ohtsuka (USA), Hristo Denichin (Bulgaria), Boudewijn Mesritz (The Netherlands), Juan Luciani (Argentina) and Jhonny Rivera (Colombia).
