Glenfiddich comes out in threes
By Marinel FitzSimonsGlenfiddich yesterday (1 March) celebrated three new launches for the William Grant owned brand.
The event, held atLondon’s Cavendish Club, marked the launch of the Glenfiddich Age of Discovery Madeira cask finish in theUKmarket, and the 1974 Vintage Reserve. Also launched was the new packaging for the 21 Year Old Gran Reserva.
The Age of Discovery expression, previously available in duty free and other markets outside the UK, is now available in selected outlets across the UK. The ideology behind it was to celebrate the “pioneering spirit” of the Portuguese explorers in the 15th Century. The 19 year old spirit is first aged in American oak barrels, then further aged briefly inMadeira casks, lending a richness to the spirit.
The 1974 Vintage Reserve is the first ever vatted vintage reserve, and was selected by a panel of 16, including Glenfiddich’s malt master, Brian Kinsman, Glenfiddich’s global brand ambassador Ian Miller, and Glenfiddich’sUKbrand ambassador Jamie Milne. Out of the three vintages tried (1973, 1974 and 1975), the 1974 was selected.
Despite its age, the whisky is surprisingly sprightly, with “vibrant vanilla sweetness and a hint of polished leather and liquorice.”
Only 50 bottles of the limited edition whisky are available in theUK.
The 21 year old’s new packaging now features the sub-branding ‘Gran Reserva’ and has a deep burgundy theme, with brighter, filigree embellishment around the branding.
The Age of Discovery has a RRP of £90, and the 21 year old Gran Reserva of £99.
