Dalmore Cigar Malt makes a comeback
By Dominic RoskrowOne of Scotland’s best loved malt whiskies is to return to British whisky shelves next month, three years after it was controversially scrapped three years ago by its owners.
The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve was discontinued by owners Whyte & Mackay when it revamped its entire Dalmore range and repositioned the distillery’s products as premium malts.
At the time it was felt that a whisky aimed at cigar smokers was an outdated concept but there was considerable disquiet within the company at the decision and the American market was particularly vocal in its opposition to the decision to discontinue the malt.
Now a new version of The Dalmore Cigar Malt will be launched in the United Kingdom in February.
The new whisky was successfully relaunched in theUnited States four months ago. The new version has a higher amount of malt matured in ex-oloroso ‘Matsulem’ casks, up from 60 per cent to 70 per cent. It has an ABV of 44% ABV and in America retailed for $125.
The new whisky scored 92 from Whisky Advocate Editor John Hansell, who described it as “spicy Christmas cake with rich sherry on the nose. Fragrant, with figs, cinnamon, ripe oranges and glade cherries.”
The Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve will be available from mid February exclusively through the Whisky Shop chain, before general release later in the year.
