Cutty cutting it

One of Scotland’s most iconic blended whiskies is set to bounce back in the spotlight with a vengeance in 2012 – and it’s starting the year with a very special aged release.

Cutty Sark has, in the past, carried the beacon for Scotch blends in many parts of the world. But in the last few years has fallen off the map in many territories. But now, with new marketing and promotional support, the distinctive blend is set for a new lease of life.

The whole range has been repackaged with subtle tweaks to the famous yellow label, iconic ship image and distinguished name.

And owner Edrington is following this week’s celebration of Burns Night with the release of Tam O’Shanter, a super premium 25 year old blend. Tam O’Shanter is the name of the Rabbie Burns poem which introduced the world to the witch Cutty Sark, from whence the famous ship took its name, and the whisky followed on.

There are just 5,000 bottles of the quality blend and it marks the first whisky selected and created by master blender Kristeen Campbell.

The new release is a variant of the award winning 25 year old Cutty Sark and is presented in special packaging. The bottle includes a scene from the poem etched in to the glass and has a wax closure showing Tam’s face. The pack also includes a special booklet with more than 50 illustrated scenes by the late Alexander Gouldie, who is considered to be one of Scotland’s finest figurative painters.

The whisky, which has an alcoholic strength of 46.5% is described as full bodied, boisterous and sherry sweet, with dark chocolate, toffee, eucalyptus and cracked pepper.

Whisky producers Edrington say that the new whisky is very drinkable but is presented in a limited edition high quality package ideal for collectors, too. Tam O’Shanter retails for £199.
