Beam Suntory launches Laphroaig TR duo

Beam Suntory Global Travel Retail (GTR) is to launch two new heavily peated no-age-statement Laphroaig expressions exclusively into the channel – Laphroaig Four Oak and Laphroaig The 1815 Legacy Edition.

Beam Suntory GTR is launching two new travel retail exclusive Laphroaig expressions

Described as a “fusion of flavours”, Laphroaig Four Oak is produced using liquid from ex-Bourbon barrels, quarter casks, virgin American oak barrels and European oak hogsheads.

Golden in colour, the expression has given nosing and tasting notes of peat smoke, stewed fruit, toasted vanilla, sandalwood, pine, fir, willow, seaweed, buttercream and salted liquorice.

The 1815 Legacy Edition celebrates two centuries of whisky making at Laphroaig, with distillery manager John Campbell releasing the whisky in honour of his predecessors.

The release was matured in first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels before being transferred into new European oak hogsheads for a further maturation period.

“Sunset orange” in colour, the expression offers aromas of “burnt apricot and raisin”, and tasting notes of “caramelised dark fruit and a dried fruit, nut, peat and oiled-wood finish”.

“Peated malts are having their moment in the spotlight, currently leading growth globally in the total malt category,” said Michael Cockram, global marketing director, travel retail at Beam Suntory.

“This growth is being driven by European and GTR powerhouse markets, where there is a preference for quality products and heritage cues. We are launching these two exceptional new products exclusively in global travel retail to meet this demand; Laphroaig is a brand with a rich history and both releases appeal to consumers’ desire for a compelling story.”

Laphroaig Four Oak is available now in a one-litre format bottled at 40% abv. The 1815 Legacy Edition will be available from April 2017, bottled at 48% abv in a 70cl format.

In its most recent financial report, Beam Suntory reported mid-single-digit growth in the first nine months of the year, bolstered by solid gains in international markets.
