Virunga Mountain Spirits opens distillery
Vodka maker Virunga Mountain Spirits has opened its new distillery and tasting room in Rwanda to the public.
Known for producing its flagship Kari Vodka, Virunga Mountain Spirits held an opening event for guests and local press yesterday (12 December).
Virunga Mountain Spirits is hoping to put Rwanda “on the map” with its new visitor experience, located at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains in Musanze. The site also includes a giftshop with merchandise and bottles of Kari Vodka on offer.
“Our vision goes beyond making great vodka. We want to show the world a different side of Rwanda – not as a place defined by its past, but as a source of inspiration, quality and craft,” said Karen Sherman, CEO of Virunga Mountain Spirits.
Guests can pre-book a tour and tasting to discover how the distillery produces its spirits first-hand. There are also add-ons available such as a ‘farm-to-fork’ meal package and a vodka tasting menu with cocktails and light bites.
Virunga Mountain Spirits said the local volcanic water and its mineral-rich soil create Kinigi potatoes that enhance the ‘smoothness and flavour’ of Kari Vodka.
Made from ‘unloved’ potatoes sourced from local farmer cooperatives and Winnaz/Hollanda Fairfoods, the 40% ABV vodka will soon be available in stores, restaurants, bars and venues across the country.
The business also claims to honour the legacy of women in alcohol production, both in Rwanda and globally.
SB recently spoke to the founder of Rwanda’s first internationally awarded rum.
