When was the Margarita cocktail first made?

It’s one of the most-loved cocktails around the world – but where and when did the Margarita cocktail originate?

Opinions on when the Margarita was first created differ

Bacardi-owned Tequila brand Patrón noted how some people believe the Margarita was created in 1929 in the city of Tijuana in Mexico. Others, the brand said, think it was accidentally created during the 1930s at Hollywood drinking den Tall O’The Clock.

On 22 February, Tequila lovers the world over celebrated International Margarita Day, marking the start of Margarita Month until 22 March.

Patrón has long been a champion of the Margarita cocktail since the brand was founded in 1989.

The brand cited data from the CGA Tequila Report – September 2022, which showed the Tequila-based tipple was the cocktail of choice among 21-34, 35-54 and 55-plus age groups.

To mark International Margarita Day, Patrón partnered with Michelin-starred chef Tom Sellers to host ‘La Cantina De Margarita’.

The initiative aimed to highlight Mexico’s famous ‘cantina’ culture. Patrón and Sellers teamed up with a number of leading London bars, including One Hundred Shoreditch, Satan’s Whiskers and Silverleaf at Pan Pacific London, to offer small Mexican dishes designed by Sellers to pair with Patrón Margaritas.

Claire Presland, Patrón brand director for Europe, said: “Patrón champions bold innovators who tirelessly perfect their craft.

“Tom is dedicated to being at the very top of his industry – from innovating menus that transport guests to another place, through to his passion and dedication for hand-made excellence, Tom pairs with Patrón’s values of perfection, which highlights the passion and mastery that goes into making every drop of Patrón Tequila.”
