Millie Milliken was celebrated for her ‘precise, engaging and pacy’ writing

Milliken impressed the judging panel with two submitted features, one exploring the link between agave biodiversity and bats, and a second exploring whisky in Vietnam.

Forming this year’s panel of judges were: Emily Harris, director of PR agency May Fox Communications; Kristiane Sherry, freelance drinks writer, educator and consultant; and Melita Kiely, editor of The Spirits Business.

“I am delighted to see Millie be awarded this year’s Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year Award – she’s a much-deserved winner,” commented Harris.

“Her style of writing, alongside her brilliant spirits knowledge and ability to unearth and tell a brilliant story shone out among a high calibre of entrants this year.”

Milliken is a freelance drinks and hospitality journalist, head of content for the Our Whisky Foundation, and Drinks Community manager at The Drinks Trust charity.

Sherry described Milliken as a “phenomenally talented writer”.

“Technically, she is precise, engaging and pacy,” Sherry added. “From an ideas and storytelling perspective, her pieces draw you in and take you on unexpected journeys. She is original, sparklingly knowledgeable and fiercely independent in her work. She is an incredibly worthy winner of this year’s Alan Lodge Award.”

The Alan Lodge Young International Drinks Writer of the Year Award was established in memory of The Spirits Business’ late deputy editor Alan Lodge. It is open to writers from around the world aged 35 and under, who cover spirits, wine, beer and cider.

Past winners of The Alan Lodge Young International Drink Writer of the Year Award include Felipe Schrieberg, Susannah Skiver Barton, and Shay Waterworth.
