Johnnie Walker reveals fifth Ghost and Rare

Diageo has unveiled the fifth release in the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare limited edition Scotch whisky series.

The fifth edition in the series is Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas, which explores the character of closed grain distillery Port Dundas in Glasgow.

The distillery, located on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, shipped its whisky from Glasgow to ports worldwide for almost 200 years. It was built in 1811, but closed in 2010.

This whisky also marks the first Ghost and Rare expression from Johnnie Walker master blender Dr Emma Walker, who took over from Dr Jim Beveridge OBE who retired earlier this year.

Walker said: “Port Dundas was, in its day, one of the finest grain whisky distilleries in the world and the rare expressions that we have chosen from our reserves are some of the most distinctive it has ever produced – their slow maturation allowing their sweet and delicate grain character to blossom.

“These rare whiskies highlight the distillery character of Port Dundas, perfectly showcasing the wonderful depth of flavour that this grain whisky brings to Johnnie Walker Blue Label.

“Its incredible character inspired us to create something truly extraordinary that pays proper tribute to the whisky makers of this storied Glasgow distillery.”

The Port Dundas whisky has been combined with liquid from two further closed distilleries, Cambus and Brora. The whisky is then blended with rare Scotch from Cameronbridge, Glenkinchie, Clynelish, Dailuaine and Auchroisk.

Tasting notes include creamy wood notes, vanilla, soft smoke, spiced apples and aromas of peach and berries.

Bottled at 43.8% ABV, Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Dundas will be available in select markets worldwide from October 2022.

To celebrate the release, Johnnie Walker has teamed up with Block Bar and Web3 consultancy firm Vayner3 to launch 75 limited edition Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Master Sets.

The Master Sets include a physical one-litre bottle, signed by master blender Walker, and an NFT version (digital version) of the bottle. The set also comes with a digital art piece by AI artist and photographer Ivona Tau.

Furthermore, buyers will have access to an exclusive virtual storytelling experience with Walker and Tau, who will share their inspiration behind the whisky and the art.
