Hacha’s cocktail competitions return for 2022

London agaveria Hacha will once again host its competition to find the UK’s best Tequila and mezcal cocktails this September.

The competitions, both founded in 2019, are part of Hacha’s mission to provide the best agave experience possible for its guests.

Hacha’s co-owner and founder of the competition Emma Murphy said: “With the success of the awards in 2019 and 2021, we couldn’t wait to announce the competition this year. We wanted to give bartenders a chance to promote their creativity in a unique way, whilst bringing the agave community together.”

Each competition aims to find the best agave-based drinks that the UK bar industry has to offer.

Both offer a step away from the traditional single brand-led cocktail competition format, with a focus on the wider categories of Tequila and mezcal in partnership with a selection of brands.

The 2022 Tequila partner brands include: Kah, Arette, Fortaleza, Don Julio, El Rayo, Vivir, Olmeca Altos, El Sueño and Patrón.

The mezcal partner brands include: Del Maguey, Madre, The Lost Explorer, Casamigos, Pensador and Mezcal Unión.

Entrants are invited to submit their bespoke creations using one of the partner brands by 26 August.

The chosen finalists will be invited to participate in a live competition at Hacha Brixton on 14 September, where each finalist will present their cocktail to a panel of judges comprising a selection of acclaimed drinks writers and industry luminaries from the UK, alongside Hacha founders Murphy and Deano Moncrieffe. Last year’s winners will also be on the judging panel.

The cocktails will be judged on replicability, taste, aroma and appearance. The bartenders must take batching for high volume into consideration.

The judges will select their top three cocktails for each spirit, which will then be served at both Hacha locations on the 15 September for consumers to vote on their favourites, acting as a final judge.

The winners of each spirit will be announced on Mexican Independence Day, which falls the following day.

The winning cocktails will be featured and served exclusively at Hacha for a year and promoted extensively throughout social media and PR channels.

The winning bartenders for each spirit will receive a three-case portfolio of the complete line up of spirits featured in both competitions, as well as a coveted first edition copy of The Tequila Ambassador by the late Tomas Estes.

The winners will also receive an agave-inspired trophy and the opportunity to host a takeover at Hacha with their winning brand.

Both competitions are now open to entries from all bartenders across the UK.

Entrants for both competitions can submit their recipe and supporting materials via email to manager@hachabar.com.
