Flor de Caña crowns Most Sustainable Bartender

Ultra-premium rum brand Flor de Caña has named Jez Carreon as Singapore’s Most Sustainable Bartender.

The brand’s Sustainable Cocktail Challenge was hosted at 15 Stanford Bar, in Capitol Kempinski in Singapore.

Winner Carreon is a bartender at Employee’s Only, Singapore, and competed against eight other bartenders to obtain the prize.

“We were truly impressed by the efforts of Jez and the other competitors to develop such creative yet sustainable cocktails that embodied Flor de Caña’s ethos and mission,” said Rob Scott, Flor de Caña Southeast Asia brand ambassador.

The judging panel consisted of industry personalities Joe Ngui of Live Twice; Chris Saw of 28 Hong Kong Street; Adrian NinÞo of Bar 1802 in Paris; Daniel Goh of Spirited Singapore; and Jasmine Tuan of Zero Waste Singapore.

The cocktails were judged based on their sustainability of ingredients, the techniques and level of creativity used to produce them, plus their presentation and flavour.

Carreon took home the prize for his cocktail New Life, which mixed Flor de Caña 12 Year Rum, Cascara Sweet Vermouth, red wine reduction, fair trade coffee-infused Bourbon and chocolate bitters.

As well as the title of Sustainable Bartender, he also received a trophy crafted from sustainable materials, a bartender kit, a cash prize and a personalised bottle of Flor de Caña 25 Year rum.

Carreon will also be able to represent his country in the Regional Final in Thailand in October, the winner of which will go on to compete in the global final of the Sustainable Cocktail Challenge in Nicaragua in 2023. The winner of this will receive the the title of Flor de Caña’s World’s Most Sustainable Bartender and a US$10,000 prize.

Last month, for the second year running, the brand partnered with bars to eradicate 15 tonnes of food waste via sustainable cocktails.
