Ilegal Mezcal moves to recycled glass bottles

Mexican brand Ilegal Mezcal has revealed its bottles will be made with 100% recycled glass.

According to the brand, the switch to recyclable glass has grown from a global glass shortage – the result of issues within the spirits supply chain.

“We measure success at Ilegal not just by cases sold, but also by our partners and environmental initiatives we can enact,” said founder John Rexer.

The new bottles will be made by family-run business Fusion y Formas, which recycles 10,000 tonnes of glass annually at its facility in Jalisco, Mexico.

“We share the same vision with Fusion y Formas to build sustainably and scale responsibly, while maintaining quality above all else,” Rexer added.

The production of the new bottles is said to require 30% less energy and emit less CO2 than regular glass. It will also save energy during the smelting process.

“My family has long taken glass that would otherwise go to a landfill and crafted it into bottles and more, with the goal of minimising waste. I enjoy Ilegal Mezcal and am happy to help move them to bottles that are better for the environment,” said Fusion y Formas director Andrés Hernández Romo.

The brand said its move to recyclable glass aligns with its mezcal production, as it uses sustainable espadín agave to create its bottlings.

The new recyclable bottles are available in 375ml and 750ml iterations, and enter the market this month.

Earlier this year, we revealed the results of the the Tequila & Mezcal Masters 2022 and rounded up the top 10 award-winning bottlings from the list.
