Aber Falls goes global with Welsh whisky

Welsh distillery Aber Falls has begun rolling out its single malt whiskies internationally.

The Abergwyngregyn-based producer, which is owned by Halewood Artisanal Spirits, launched its inaugural whisky in May 2021. The single malt was the first to be distilled in North Wales in more than a century.

In September last year, Aber Falls unveiled its 2021 bottling.

Now the distillery has set out its plans for global expansion. It will start by making its whiskies available through the on- and off-trade in more than 10 countries, including Australia, Germany, Denmark and Canada.

Education plays a key role in Aber Falls’ expansion

As part of its long-term expansion strategy, the producer aims to educate importers and retailers about Welsh whisky. The distillery is also working with others in the category to propose a geographical indication for Welsh whisky, as producers of English whisky did recently.

“Aber Falls is the first whisky distillery in North Wales for more than 100 years, and we plan to be here for the next 100 years, too,” said James Wright, the distillery’s managing director.

“It’s important to create a strong footprint and take people on Aber Falls’ unique journey and as such, we’ll continue to educate the trade and consumers about the Welsh whisky category and how we form part of it. This will be vital in helping drive brand advocacy and repeat purchase – in the UK and beyond.

“This expansion is a long-term strategy for years to come – not months – to see international growth for our brand, as well as an opportunity to promote brand Wales and all it has to offer to key markets around the world.”
