The Burnt Chef Project works to challenge mental health stigma within the UK hospitality industry. Together with The Drinks Trust, the two organisations aim to deliver greater mental health support across the industry via The Drinks Trust’s 24/7 helpline.

The most recent survey from The Burnt Chef Project found 40% of respondents have struggled with their mental health over the last 12 months, and approximately one in six people said their mental health was ‘not good’. General managers seemed to struggle most, with 42% reporting a drop in their mental wellbeing.

However, 60% of those surveyed said they felt ‘OK’ or ‘better’ about working in the hospitality industry. Furthermore, 33% of those not currently working in the sector are reportedly looking to return in the next 12 months.

Kris Hall, founder of The Burnt Chef Project, said: “Through our partnership with The Drinks Trust, we can now do even more to support the hospitality community through its toughest period to date. By providing complimentary access to The Drinks Trust to the growing Burnt Chef community we are now able to provide mid-term assistance around a wealth of concerns as well as immediate help when it’s needed.”

The Burnt Chef Project launched a text support service in February this year to help people who need immediate support.

The Drinks Trust extended its confidential helpline last year to offer a 24/7 service. All calls are answered by counsellors or clinically trained psychotherapists, so callers can receive immediate support to deal with personal or work-related issues.

‘You are not alone’

Nicola Burston, operations manager at The Drinks Trust, said: “We are extremely pleased to have partnered with The Burnt Chef Project and to extend our helpline services to their stakeholders. Through this association, we aim to extend the message of our services to even more people who are suffering from any form of mental health difficulty and don’t know where to turn to.

“The Drinks Trust, as The Burnt Chef Project, is fully committed in removing the stigma surrounding mental health, so please, if you are not feeling OK get in contact with our helpline. You are really not alone in this.”

The Drinks Trust’s free 24/7 helpline is: 0800 9154610.

Those looking for help can also contact the 24/7 service at helpline@drinkstrust.org.uk, or by texting ‘Hi’ on Whatsapp to 00 353 87 369 0010.

The helpline also offers an internal referral to more than 30 online cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) courses, each with different themes. There is also an option to have up to six specialist one-to-one telephone sessions, which could cover legal advice, mediation support, life and career coaching, financial advice, consumer advice and parenting coaching.
