Don Julio debuts orange-infused Tequila

Diageo-owned Tequila brand Don Julio has created a limited edition expression finished in ‘orange wine’ casks.

Don Julio’s new reposado employs casks that formerly aged wine made from oranges

Called Don Julio Primavera, the new Tequila is briefly aged in casks that previously held wine made from macerated orange peels, rather than a ferment produced from skin-on white grapes.

Primavera will be released in larger quantities next spring

The 40% ABV bottling was originally set for launch in spring 2022, but Diageo has released the product early in limited quantities.

“This summer has been bursting with a resurgence of celebrations and there’s nothing we like more at Tequila Don Julio than a great party, which is why we are so thrilled to be able to introduce Tequila Don Julio Primavera earlier than planned,” said Christina Choi, senior vice-president of Tequila, Diageo North America.

“There are only 15,000 cases available now, but don’t worry if you can’t find it this year – just as the name suggests, Tequila Don Julio Primavera will be back for our originally scheduled launch in spring 2022.”

The expression is said to to deliver notes of honeyed agave, spice and a light citrus finish. It is recommended in a simple serve topped with club soda and garnished with a Cara Cara orange wedge.

Primavera is available for a limited time across the US, with an RRP of US$99.

Don Julio has a history of experimenting with cask finishes, and unveiled a Lagavulin-finished expression in 2019.

The Primavera launch follows the release of Diageo’s full-year results yesterday (29 July). The spirits giant saw its net sales increase by 16% in fiscal 2021, led by Tequila sales, which grew by a jaw-dropping 79%. Diageo CEO Ivan Menezes predicted “steady” growth for Tequila outside the US.

Don Julio was the third-biggest-selling Tequila in the world in 2020.
