Discus helps distillers secure Energy Star certification
The Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus) has teamed up with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create energy-saving tools and resources for distillers.
The two bodies are developing an Energy Star programme, which will include an Energy Performance Indicator (EPI) benchmarking tool to help distilleries secure Energy Star certification for their production facilities.
Energy Star is the US government-backed symbol for energy efficiency.
Chris Swonger, president and CEO of Discus, said: “The careful stewardship of the environment and natural resources is essential for the US distilled spirits industry, due to the very nature of our agriculturally based products.
“We look forward to the launch of this EPI benchmarking tool for distilleries to secure nationally recognised certification for production facilities and overall cost savings for their businesses.”
To ensure the EPI benchmarking tool will work effectively, Discus has launched a survey to understand how distilleries and facilities operate in different conditions and climates across the US.
The survey was developed by Energy Star and will be administered by Duke University. Producers are asked to respond by Saturday 24 August.
