St Patrick’s Day (17 March) celebrations may look a little different this year, with many bars around the world forced to remain closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, thanks to the rise in at-home mixology, budding bartenders can still mix up a storm to celebrate the day.

To offer some inspiration for St Patrick’s Day cocktails, we spoke with top spirits brands and international bartenders to find out their picks for some of the best cocktails to make yourself.

Irish Coffee

The ubiquitous Irish classic, the Irish Coffee. This iteration from London bar Swift calls for the use of Jameson Caskmates Irish whiskey.

Ingredients

40ml Jameson Caskmates
75ml Robusto filter coffee

Demerara sugar

Double cream
Fresh nutmeg

Method: Lightly whip the cream until it is very slightly thickened, then set aside. In a serving glass, combine the Jameson Caskmates, coffee and Demerara sugar to taste. Slowly pour the cream over a bar spoon and onto the coffee, making sure the cream floats on top. Garnish with grated nutmeg.

Wogan

This signature serve from Irish bar Homeboy is elegant and dry, just like famous Irish BBC presenter Terry Wogan.

Ingredients

40ml Teeling Irish whiskey

10ml Apricot brandy

15ml Lime juice

15ml Sugar syrup

15ml Saline solution

Method: Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker along with a handful of ice and shake until the outside of the shaker feels cold. Fine strain into a chilled Coupette glass and serve.

Apple of My Eye

The Apple of my Eye is a Teeling take on the humble combination of whiskey and apple juice. This serve unites award-winning Teeling Small Batch, freshly pressed apple juice and a touch of fresh honey.

Ingredients

40ml Teeling Small Batch Irish whiskey

60ml Fresh apple juice

20ml Honey syrup

Method: Add all the ingredients to an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake. Strain into an glass, top with ice and garnish with fresh apple slices and a cinnamon stick.

Precision Pilot

This vibrant cocktail was created by the award-winning team at New York’s Dead Rabbit.

Ingredients

30ml Tullamore Dew 12 Year blended Irish whiskey

30ml Lillet Rosé

22ml Campari

15ml Combier Pamplemousse Rosé Liqueur

Method: In an ice-filled mixing glass, add all the ingredients and stir together until chilled and combined. Fine strain the cocktail into a Rocks glass with a large chunk of ice, and garnish with a spritz of grapefruit oils.

Merrow’s Melody

This cocktail from London’s Jim and Tonic distillery is named in honour of the Merrow, an Irish mythical creature that is half fish and half human.

Ingredients

50ml Jim and Tonic Mercato Gin

15ml Green Chartreuse

15ml Midori

25ml Fresh lime juice

10ml Sugar syrup

20ml Egg white

Method: Pour all ingredients into a shaker and dry shake without ice, then fill the shaker with ice and shake once again. Double strain into a chilled coupette glass and garnish with a twist of lemon peel and two lavender stems.

Irish Coffee Martini

Renowned for its Irish Coffees, New York’s Dead Rabbit put a twist on the signature serve with this chilled Irish Coffee Martini.

Ingredients

45ml Bushmills Black Bush blended Irish whiskey

45ml Cold brew coffee concentrate, or drip coffee for a less-strong flavour

15ml Demerara sugar syrup

Dash of aromatic bitters

Method: Add all the ingredients to an ice-filled cocktail shaker and shake together hard. Fine strain into a chilled Nick & Nora glass and garnish with lemon oils.

Cold Brew

This chilled twist on the classic Irish Coffee combines Slane Irish whiskey with maple syrup and cold brew coffee.

Ingredients

50ml Slane Irish whiskey

15ml Maple syrup

50ml Cold brew coffee

Method

Add all the ingredients to a cocktail shaker, fill with ice and shake to chill and combine. Strain into an ice-filled glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

Irish Wolfhound

Combining Jameson Black Barrel with fresh grapefruit and spicy ginger beer, this refreshing serve can be easily mixed up at home.

Ingredients

45ml Jameson Black Barrel

45ml Ginger beer

15ml Pink grapefruit

Dash of spiced blackcurrant cordial

Method: In a Highball glass, add all the ingredients and stir to combine. Fill the glass with ice and garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Whiskey Smash

This signature serve from London’s Homeboy is a modern revival of a cocktail found in Harry Johnson’s bartenders manual.

Ingredients

40ml Roe & Co Irish whiskey

20ml Noilly Prat vermouth

20ml Mint and spinach syrup

Dash of orange bitters

Fresh mint

Method

Add all the ingredients into a mixing glass with a handful of ice and stir for 15-20 rotations until ice-cold. Pour into a rocks glass over a large cube of ice, and garnish with fresh mint.

Four Leaf Clover

Developed by the bartenders at Orlando-based Margaritaville, this St Patrick’s Day-themed serve combines Teeling Irish whiskey with spicy Gosling’s ginger beer.

Ingredients

45ml Teeling Irish whiskey

Three wedges of lime

10ml Simple syrup

120ml Gosling’s ginger beer

Method: Add the Teeling whiskey and lime wedges to a cocktail tin and muddle together. Add the simple syrup, fill with ice and shake to combine. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice and top with ginger beer.
