UK drinkers favour vodka for at-home cocktails

Vodka is the most popular spirit for making cocktails at home in the UK followed by gin and rum, according to a new survey by Bacardi.

35% of UK drinkers used vodka to make cocktails at home

Bermuda-based drinks firm Bacardi conducted a survey of 1,017 adults aged from 25 to 65 in the UK through a Perspectus Global internet poll from 8-11 May 2020. The research has been released ahead of World Cocktail Day tomorrow (13 May).

Among those surveyed, 35% named vodka as their spirit of choice for cocktail making, while 33% selected gin and 23% chose rum.

The poll found that 43% of respondents have attempted to perfect cocktails at home since the nation’s lockdown began on 23 March.

The rum-based Mojito emerged as the most popular cocktail to make at home, followed by the Piña Colada and the Margarita.

More than half (53%) of Brits also believe the cocktail hour has made a comeback in recent weeks during the coronavirus lockdown. The time most people were likely to raise a glass virtually with family and friends was 7.30pm, the survey noted.

More than quarter of respondents (27%) said they will continue hosting virtual cocktail hours with friends and family beyond lockdown.

Nearly a third (31%) of consumers have enjoyed digital drinks parties with friends as a way of keeping in touch and one in five (21%) have dressed up for the virtual drinks occasion. In addition, 29% of respondents said they have been using specialist cocktail glasses and 27% are making use of a cocktail shaker ahead of online gatherings.

When it comes to booze-free offerings, nearly a quarter (23%) of drinkers shared a virtual toast over a non-alcoholic or low-alcohol cocktail (0.5%-1.2% ABV).

The most popular alcohol-free serves were Virgin Piña Coladas, Virgin Mojitos and Virgin Marys. Bacardi said millennials were the most mindful drinkers as data showed 41% of respondents aged between 25 and 34 have consumed a low- or no-alcohol cocktail during virtual drinks.

To celebrate World Cocktail Day tomorrow, Bacardi will host a virtual mixology masterclass on Instagram Live. Held in collaboration with cocktail bar Grind, the free class will offer tips and tricks for making drinks at home.

The masterclass can be viewed on the @grind Instagram page.
