UK liqueur sales hit £1.3 billion

Liqueur sales in the UK reached £1.3 billion (US$1.7bn) in 2019 as consumers purchased 43 million bottles, according to figures from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA).

Brits brought 43 million bottles of liqueurs in the last recorded 12 months

The WSTA’s latest Market Report found that UK consumers purchased 18m bottles of cream liqueurs in the 12 months to 12 September 2019, while 25m bottles of non-cream liqueurs were sold – an increase of 4%.

The trade body said that 2018 “could be seen as the year of colourful cocktails, perfect for Instagram” and that the trend continued into 2019 with the equivalent of almost 10m bottles of non-cream liqueurs sold in pubs, bars and restaurants.

In addition, pubs have “continued to expand their cocktail menus and bartenders continue to innovate and create new cocktails”, the WSTA noted.

Non-cream liqueur sales in the UK off-trade in the 12 months to 12 September 2019 are valued at £250m (US$330m).

“Last year the WSTA highlighted that liqueurs have often been overlooked in the spirits category, but our sales data shows a renewed interest from UK consumers,” said WSTA chief executive Miles Beale.

“The liqueur category covers an array of colours making liqueur drinks very Instagrammable. We expect further growth in 2020 as Brits continue to experiment with new and exciting drinks choices and share their finds on social media.”
