Macallan 30-year-old cask sets auction record
Bonhams Hong Kong has set a new world record for the most expensive whisky cask sold at auction after a 30-year-old Macallan Sherry hogshead fetched HK$4.5 million (US$572,000).
The cask was filled in 1989
The cask – said to be one of the oldest from Macallan available on the market – was estimated to fetch HK$3.6m-HK$4.6m (US$460,000-US$588,000).
Distilled in 1989, the cask can be stored at The Macallan distillery for as long as the buyer wishes or transferred into 261 bottles. The identity of the buyer has not been disclosed.
“Not only has this 30-year-old cask set the new world auction record for a whisky cask, but it is also the most expensive per bottle cask ever sold at auction,” said Daniel Lam, Bonhams’ director of wine and spirits, Asia. Each bottle from the cask has been valued at HK$17,103 (US$2,200).
Bonhams Hong Kong set the previous record price for a whisky cask after an American hogshead containing 22-year-old Macallan sold for HK$3.4m (US$440,000) in November 2018.
In August, the auction house sold what was believed to be the final Hanyu Ichiro’s Full Card Series for HK$7.2m (US$917,000), setting a new record for a Japanese whisky collection sale.
Last month, Sotheby’s in London set a new world record for the priciest single bottle of whisky when a 60-year-old Macallan fetched £1.5m (US$1.9m).
