Spirit Master: Sierra Milenario Tequila Fumado

Ahead of National Tequila Day tomorrow (24 July), we celebrate an award-winning expression made using a “unique” ahumado process with mesquite wood.

Sierra Milenario Tequila Fumado was one of four Master-winning expressions in the Tequila & Mezcal Masters

Every week, SB showcases some of the top-scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competition.

During this year’s Tequila & Mezcal Masters at Café Pacifico in London, two panels of experienced judges assessed an array of expressions from premium to ultra premium, and blanco to mixto.

One of four Master-winning Tequilas, Sierra Milenario Tequila Fumado, stormed to success in the Blanco – Ultra Premium round.

Seven Masters were awarded during this year’s Tequila & Mezcal Masters

One judge commended the Tequila’s progression of “dry and powerful” flavours, from “grassy and peppery” at the start to “balanced bonfire smoke” on the finish.

Produced by German spirits producer Borco, Sierra Milenario Tequila Fumado is said to have “exceptional notes of smokiness” due to the “unique” ahumado process with mesquite wood.

After slowly cooking the agave in stainless steel ovens for 24 hours, the cooked agave is placed in a lidded stainless steel container with a double base containing perforations.

A fire of mesquite logs and Mexican oak is lit under the container and the perforations allow the interaction and infusion of the smoke onto the agaves for eight hours.

The expression is bottled at 41.5% abv and priced at £55 (US$68.60).
