Spirit Master: Maison la Mauny VSOP 40°
As we approach the first World Rum Day on 11 July, we highlight top medallist Maison la Mauny VSOP 40° from SB’s Rum and Cachaça Masters last year.

Every week, SB celebrates some of the top-scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competition as part of our Spirits Masters series.
Bottled at 40% abv, Maison la Mauny VSOP 40° is a blend of rums that have been aged for four years in oak casks – 60% French barrels and 40% American ex-Bourbon barrels. It is described as “rich and complex” with spiced floral notes and hints of tobacco.
Held at The Rum Kitchen in London’s Notting Hill, The Rum and Cachaça Masters 2018 saw judges taste expressions in categories spanning cachaça, overproof, agricole and ultra premium. The Rhum Agricole – Aged flight produced a Master medal for Groupe BBS’s Maison la Mauny VSOP 40°. One judge said: “This was close to… perfect.”
In addition to grabbing a Master medal, Maison la Mauny VSOP 40° was also named Taste Master – meaning it was deemed ‘best in class’ among the Master recipients on the day.
The competition awarded 13 Master medals, and for each expression judges must have agreed a score of 90% or above – a sign that producers are paying close attention to the quality of their liquid. Judges noted excellence among gold, agricole and spiced entries, and highlighted them as exciting categories to watch in the future.
