‘Ghost’ distillery Glenury star of latest Johnnie Walker blend

Johnnie Walker has released the third blend in its limited edition Ghost and Rare series, made using stocks from the closed Highland distillery Glenury Royal.

The Johnnie Walker Ghost and Rare series gives Scotch fans a taste of whisky from closed distilleries

Launched in 2017, the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost & Rare collection highlights whisky from closed distilleries and other “incredibly rare” liquids.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal features whisky from Glenury Royal “at its heart”.

The Highland distillery was founded in 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay, a member of the British Parliament and the first man to walk one thousand miles in one thousand hours.

The distillery was destroyed by a fire just a few weeks after opening, but later became one of only three Scottish distilleries to hold a royal title. Glenury Royal eventually closed in 1985.

The blending team at brand owner Diageo also used two whiskies from closed distilleries Cambus and Pittyvaich to include in the latest blend, which additionally features “rare” whiskies from Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie.

“Shining a light on this hidden treasure of the whisky world is something we’ve wanted to do for some time,” said Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge.

“This indulgent new limited edition provides us with a wonderful opportunity to explore the remarkable layers of rich fruit found in every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label.”

The series is an extension of Johnnie Walker’s ultra-premium Blue Label portfolio. The latest blend follows the launch of Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Port Ellen and Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Brora.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal is bottled at an abv of 43.8% and will be available globally from October 2019 at an RRP of £275 (US$345).
