Bimber Distillery debuts oolong tea-infused gin
London-based Bimber Distillery has launched Da Hong Pao Tea Gin, which is made using oolong tea.
Bimber Da Hong Pao Tea Gin is bottled at 51.8% abv
Described as the “UK’s first” gin made with handpicked oolong tea, the new expression was inspired by master distiller and co-founder Darius Plazewski’s love of tea.
Oolong tea is said to be one of the world’s most expensive tea plants. Da Hong Pao is a semi-fermented, heavily-oxidised oolong tea that originates from wild rare tea plants that grow on the cliffs of Wuyi Mountain in China.
According to Plazewski, the tea “yields a golden yellow liquid that produces a pleasant long-lasting after-taste” and is known “for its nourishing medicinal properties”.
Plazewski infused the Da Hong Pao leaves with Bimber gin for one week to “ensure maximum flavour extraction” before filtering and bottling the expression at 51.8% abv.
The bottle, designed by Bimber co-founder Ewelina Chruszczyk, pays tribute to the old pharmacy-style brown bottle and bears a label representing Chinese traditions of herbal remedies.
Bimber Da Hong Pao Tea Gin has an RRP of £38.75 (US$49.16) per 500ml bottle and is available to buy online from Bimber Distillery, The Whisky Exchange and Speciality Drinks.
