Patrón names 2019 Margarita of the Year

After more than four million votes were cast, Patrón Tequila has crowned the Dynasty Margarita created by bartender Jay Khan as its 2019 Margarita of the Year.

The Dynasty Margarita has been named Patrón Tequila’s Margarita of the Year 2019

Launched on International Margarita Day (22 February), the contest saw eight bartenders from around the world each create their own twist on the classic Tequila-based cocktail.

The public were then given the chance to vote on their favourite creation and Khan’s Dynasty Margarita took home this year’s title.

Inspired by Hong Kong, the Dynasty Margarita incorporates the traditional Chinese ingredients of lychee and ginger combined with the fresh agave notes of Patrón Silver and Patrón Citrónge Orange.

Khan, co-founder and head mixologist at Hong Kong venue Coa, said: “I am incredibly honoured that the Dynasty Margarita was crowned as the global fan favourite for this year’s Margarita of the Year search.

“I was excited to create a Margarita that reflects Hong Kong which is why I incorporated lychee and ginger, which are known to this region. I am grateful to have participated in this search and thank Patrón for the opportunity to share my recipe with millions of Margarita fans from around the world.”

Other creations in this year’s contest included the Pasifika Margarita, made by Samuel Jimenez; the turmeric- and pineapple-filled Golden Hour Margarita and the Flamingo Park Margarita, made by Tyler Kitzman in Miami.

Lee Applbaum, Patrón’s global chief marketing officer, said: “In the five years since we first launched the Margarita of the Year search, we have had the pleasure and excitement of uncovering dozens of incredibly gifted and skilled bartenders. Jay Khan is no exception, and he rightfully deserves the title of this year’s winner.

“Margarita of the Year is a true testament to the ongoing and widespread love of the Margarita and the ways Patrón Tequila highlights its unique flavours.”
