Producers spanning Scotch, rum, gin and Tequila are upping their game when it comes to offering guests that special Instagram-worthy experience.

From a 200-year-old rum distillery that tantalises all the senses to a new Scotch whisky distillery modelled on Speyside’s scenery, there’s no shortage of breath-taking sites for spirits lovers to visit.

Bombay Sapphire Distillery – England, UK

Laverstoke Mill, London Road, Whitchurch, RG28 7NR

Opened in 2014, the two-hectare distillery site at Laverstoke Mill in Hampshire, England, houses three still houses, a tank farm and other facilities to produce Bombay Sapphire gin. Laverstoke Mill’s centrepiece is two magnificent intertwining glasshouses designed by Heatherwick Studio (famous for the show-stopping Olympic Cauldron and the new London buses) where guests can see the botanicals in their natural state.

Visitors can discover the vapour infusion distillation process in the Dakin Still House, wander through the Botanical Dry Room, and breathe in the scents of the 10 botanicals from around the world that are used to make Bombay Sapphire and Star of Bombay.

Hakushu Distillery – Japan

Situated on the slopes of Mount Kaikomagatake in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture, Hakushu Distillery was built by Japanese drinks group Suntory in 1973. Hakushu’s location was selected for its plentiful and high-quality water source. Suntory even bases its mineral water operations in the same area.

At the distillery, guests can learn about the history behind the brand in the Suntory Museum of Whisky, taste rare and limited edition whiskies at the Hakushu Bar, take a break at the mountain forest restaurant and even visit a bird sanctuary.

The Lakes Distillery – England, UK

Setmurthy, Cockermouth, CA13 9SJ

The Lakes Distillery is situated in an idyllic site with the backdrop of the Cumbrian hills and mountains, and there’s plenty to do with a visitor centre, bar and bistro, and a shop. And if you’re visiting the distillery on a Saturday or Sunday, you can spend half an hour feeding and petting alpacas.

The Lakes Distillery formed in 2011 and began operating in 2014, becoming the region’s first new distillery in more than a century. The firm produces gin, vodka, flavoured liqueurs and single malt whisky. 

La Rojeña Distillery – Jalisco, Mexico

Calle Jose Cuervo Labastida #7346400 Tequila, Jalisco

The home of Jose Cuervo Tequila is also thought to be the oldest distillery in Latin America, and showcases the colourful town of Tequila.

The distillery tour takes you through the entire production process, from the brick-built ovens for cooking the agave, the distillation room with its copper stills and the thousands of barrels that are stacked in the ageing halls.

Relax after the tour on the patio of the Margaritas Bar or take a walk through the Plaza Juan Soriano to admire the work of one of Mexico’s most important sculptors of the 20th century.

The Macallan Distillery – Scotland, UK

Easter Elchies, Charlestown of Aberlour, AB38 9RX

Scottish spirits group Edrington opened the picturesque Macallan Scotch whisky distillery and visitor centre in June this year.

The site was designed by leading architect Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and built by Elgin-based Robertson Construction.

The design of the roof takes inspiration from ancient Scottish hills while “minimising the visual impact” on the Speyside countryside. The undulating timber roof structure, thought to be one of the most complicated of its kind in the world, comprises 380,000 individual components.

Midleton Distillery – County Cork, Ireland

The Old Distillery, Distillers Walk, Midleton

The lush fields of southern Ireland is where every drop of Jameson Irish whiskey is produced. Alongside the Midleton site, Jameson also has a second visitor experience in Dublin. There’s also a microdistillery onsite that produces experimental Irish whiskeys.

The Jameson Distillery Experience Tour at Midleton includes a 75-minute guided tour, a tour of the building, and a tasting of three expressions including Jameson.

The striking red and green entrance of the site also offers a worthy backdrop for any Instagrammer.

Jim Beam American Stillhouse – Kentucky, US

Jim Beam Bourbon’s flagship distillery in Clermont features guided tours through the entire process, starting with the natural limestone water well and going all the way through the mashing, distilling, barreling, ageing and bottling steps.

The Jim Beam American Stillhouse has got more than a few picturesque sights. The building itself is a replica of a 1940’s stillhouse, including the actual staircase from the original historic stillhouse.

The site also features a Jim Beam Bourbon bar, with cocktails that rotate monthly, and a variety of drink options that showcase the complete Jim Beam family of brands.

Palais Bénédictine – Normandy, France

110 rue Alexandre Le Grand, 76400 Fécamp

The eclectic Palais Bénédictine is situated in the medieval architectural town of Fécamp. The palace is a mixture of extravagance and tradition and mixes the styles of neo-gothic and neo-renaissance in its design.

The tours start with the museum, which houses a collection of old sacred Benedictine art. Visitors can also take in the Gothic Room, the Renaissance Room and The Abbots’ Room, which pays homage to Fécamp Abbey’s 16 most famous abbots. Next, the tour delves into the Bénédictine distillery, with its hammered copper stills, some dating to the 19th century, and ageing cellars.

The Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience – Jamaica

Campari Group’s Appleton Estate Rum Experience is nestled in the Nassau Valley and has recently received a US$7.2 million expansion

The green lush environment of the distillery and the beautiful island of Jamaica makes the trip to Appleton Estate all the more worthwhile.

The distillery, which reopened in January 2018, offers a multi-sensory rum experience featuring an interactive tour of the history of the estate. Indulge in cocktails and Jamaican dishes at the site’s new Black River Lounge and grab some souvenirs at the expansive retail store.

The group is also looking at plans to offer a small-scale hotel in the future.

Talisker Distillery – Scotland, UK

With its whitewashed walls and stunning location, the Isle of Skye’s oldest working distillery is home to Diageo-owned Talisker Scotch whisky.

The Isle of Skye houses some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes from soft serene shores to the jagged peaks of the Cuillin mountains.

True whisky connoisseurs can take in an indepth tour of the distillery followed by a tutored tasting of five Talisker expressions.
