Chapel Down plans microdistillery in King’s Cross

English wine producer Chapel Down is “building on the success” of its spirits line with plans to open a bar, restaurant and microdistillery in King’s Cross, London.

The Kent-based firm will build an “experiential” bar, restaurant and ‘ginnery’ in London, which is expected to open in January 2019. The group has exchanged contracts on a 5,000-square-foot site by Regent’s Canal where, subject to planning and licensing, it will open the Chapel Down Gin Works.

Chief executive Fraser Thompson said the firm was “encouraged” by the performance of its spirits and has “seen success” in leading London bars and restaurants.

The Chapel Down Gin Works will be located 38 minutes by train from the company’s new brewery in Ashford, which is scheduled to open in March 2019.

Chapel Down has also revealed its half-year financial results for the six months to 30 June 2018. During this period, sales of Chapel Down’s wines and spirits arm grew by 19% to £3.98 million (US$5.19m).

Wine and spirits witnessed a gross profit increase of 24% to £1.57m (US$2.05m). Total sales, including beer, were up 15% to £5.7m (US$7.43m) during the period.

In November last year, the wine producer made its debut in the gin and vodka category with the launch of two expressions, produced with single vintage grapes.

Thompson added: “We operate in three exciting markets – English wines, premium craft beer and premium gin/vodka. We expect all three markets to continue to out-perform the drinks industry.

“We are well funded and will continue to invest and look to make the most of these opportunities over the coming years.”
