Older single malts join Connoisseurs Choice range

Gordon & MacPhail has grown its Connoisseurs Choice range with a series of single malts aged for a minimum of 30 years.

The Connoisseurs Choice range features expressions from Mortlach, Caol Ila and Linkwood

The 122-year-old company announced earlier this year it would streamline its 14 ranges to five: Discovery, Distillery Labels, Connoisseurs Choice, Private Collection, and Generations.

Connoisseurs Choice, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has added 37 new expressions to its range. The new additions include liquid from Mortlach, Caol Ila and Linkwood, among others.

Each single malt is available in decanter-style bottles inside engraved wooden presentation boxes. The expressions have been selected by Stuart Urquhart, associate director of whisky supply and grandson of George Urquhart, who first launched Connoisseurs Choice in 1968.

Stephen Rankin, director of prestige and fourth-generation family member, said: “When my grandfather first launched Connoisseurs Choice in the 1960s he was considered eccentric for taking such an approach.

“Today, he is heralded as one of the industry’s pioneers having provided whisky lovers with the opportunity to explore many whiskies never readily available as single malts.

“Our new releases celebrate this proud heritage, presenting unique expressions from revered distilleries that will appeal to a wide range of tastes around the world.”

The range will be bottled as small batch, non-chill-filtered vintage whiskies priced between US$75 and US$500.

Gordon & MacPhail is also releasing three new expressions in its new Discovery range, “designed as an ideal starting point for whisky drinkers”. The range will be segmented into three profiles: Smoky, Sherry and Bourbon with whiskies from Ledaig, Bunnahabhain and Tomatin distilleries.

The Discovery range launched in May 2018, with Distillery Labels following in July. Private Collection will be revealed later this year, and the launch of the next Generations whiskies is yet to be announced.
